In fact, the material, Elizabeth Fremantle’s novel Queen’s Gambit, might have lent itself better to a miniseries. It’s bizarre to reflect that Weinstein would probably have produced this if it had even been made 10 years ago.Īïnouz, one of Brazil’s most interesting directors, supplies lashings of Vermeer in this English-language debut, and even if he’s hardly in court painter mode, the film’s default handsomeness still plays it quite safe.
